The news dropped down today some government colleges students made manifestation against school ending at 15pm.
In Vacoas two girls colleges – state schools made manifestation.
Students did not attend classes and at 1430 they broke main door lock of their colleges to make a manifestation at Vacoas Bus park.
What was police force doing ?You asking yourselves

According to internal sources the rector of one of the colleges give the permission to the students to pursue with the illegal manifestation .
Onwards when situation went out of control – when main door lock was broken she took action to give detention to students who went for the manifestation.
Do you really believe that the rector of the colleges could not control the students and has no authority or …..

Flashback – I hope that you people still remember teachers problem -they never wanted to stay at school till 15 pm but wanted the big salary.
Rumors are spreading that teachers are inciting students on all levels.
What are the problems if colleges end at 15pm?
Have you forgot that primary school start at 09 00 to end at 15 30 pm?
It is true that due to the fact colleges ending at 15 pm lead to great traffic problem .
The 30 minutes addition – teachers are not formed to manage with extra time for extra curriculum activities.
Students are in a hurry to go to tuition to make teachers become richer and richer.
To Students: Dont get yourself manipulated.
Many students are still immature and we all know that making manifestation is a nice way to show that we are strong or a simple way of not staying in class.
If the government step back from this decision , who will be gaining from this situation ?
Wont Teachers ask that they stop to work at 14 30pm and return back to square 1 ?

1st , The Teachers should do their job. It shudnt be a big deal. just make the most out of those 30 additional minutes.. its ridiculous to oversee addtionnal time when everybody wants more time! That SHOULD HAVE BEEN a normal reaction from reponsible teacher… not a big deal.
The REAL problem is transport!! Where i live, Baie do tombeau and roche bois, YOU DNT EVEN GET sTaNdinG PlaCe. so guys n gals who complain about not geting a seat.. shut the fuck up! *thats in the morning*
in the afternoon, the “Gare Du Nord” is so overcrowded that u dont get to see 5 metres in front of you. Thats specifically because ALL schools now release @ 3pm. previously there was a 5-10-10 minutes delay between the diffrent schools end time in port louis. This way, not ALL the students in the capital converge @ the GARE DU NORD @ the same time. but now… its just a massacre.enplus la chaleur!! and the traffic jam.
Definitely… they messed up.. not because of the 30additional minutes in school, but the transport problem these 30 additional minutes caused.
PS: I am concerned with port louis. thats is, schools of the north and center of mauritius.(who go through GARE VICTORIA and GARE DU NORD)

When I was in college, I could not even go to KFC to eat after school hours with school uniform on without the police officers questioning us. We were not even allowed to at the bus station for more than 15 minutes. But now, there is a “laisser aller” situation.

OK, I’ll try to make this short. I’ve always said it aloud that the Mauritian Education system is completely biased. Another thing, the Mauritian society has been living in a world of excess, of self-satisfaction and egoistic navel staring for the past 10 years.
These kids have had so much of everything that they do not even see the advantages they have. They don’t see how lucky they are. We are an African country and here, compared to the rest of Africa they are kings:

The USAID Center reports as of 2005, forty percent of school-aged children in Africa do not attend primary school and there are still 46 million African children that have never stepped into a classroom.”

Now, go over again and whine about education. You’ll be proud when you’ll have kids and tell them that you did a demonstration because you didn’t want to study. Hope your kid will reply: “bé papa, lacoz sa mem nou pov?”.
Hi all. Can I share a few points –
1. So maybe it *IS* wrong that students were still at KFC at 1600. So if they didn’t have tuition that day, maybe they *SHOULD* have been at home revising etc. Who knows — maybe they chose to stay in the town centre until the traffic & bus stations calmed down a little. *It does not necessarily follow that since the students are eating, they have no right to protest against changes in school systems.*
2. Many comments against teachers, especially saying that teachers are lazy at school but work hard in tuition. Yes, it does happen sometimes, but such ‘blanket’ generalisations do not help anyone. I find that students follow more closely and work harder in tuition, than in school. I find that parents are more responsive and trusting of tuition-teachers than of school-teachers. Tuition continues until the afternoon before the exam, but teachers are still present at school even when the form V are taking weeks off to revise at home. I don’t mean to put the blame on others. But the situation requires more than to simply single out the teachers as an easy target.
3. Kids are getting 30 minutes extra education per day. So why are they complaining? Maybe a minority *are* lazy but maybe the majority can see that *the time is not being used well*. It is a little bit primitive to think that we can simply say, Sit down and read and revise for 30 more minutes. Pointless too: reading and revision can be done anywhere, at any time. *Maybe if benefits could be seen in these changes, then the kids would not be demonstrating.*
4. Under the PRB report, EVERYONES’ pay increased; it’s related to inflation and the rising cost of living. Other sectors saw their duties remain THE SAME but teachers saw their duties INCREASE. Can we not understand how that might cause discontent? Would you like YOUR own children to be educated by people who do not even try to stand up for their rights, people who work for free? Thought not. Whilst you are learning, if someone offers to teach you more, for free, you accept. Once you are working, if someone tells you to do more, without a pay-rise, you decline. Anyone here who believes otherwise should get a job first then come talk afterwards.

Did you ever hear of voluntary work. I work voluntarily for guitar makers associations, international relations research groups, build websites for free and give photoshop lectures free of charge to young adults getting back into the education system. Even my own blog asks for some work. Why are people so concentrated on money… And if you tell me to get a job first, you’ve missed your point. And does this make me a bad person to do voluntary work? Does that make me less professional?

sometimes ive tuit at 5.15…in the mean time i.e frm the time skul ends n tuit begins…ive the time 2 go @ kfc or ozer wer….n going out also help one 2 get fresh n star studying again…zats the main difrence btwin skul n tuit…we stay in skul 4 abt 6-7hours where as while going 2 tuit we r already fresh due to we were free n had free time..also tuit is only 1 hours..zats all

OK so what I said earlier wasn’t totally accurate… PRB recommended an increase which covered inflation AND increase in working hours (to an extent). What is causing problems is the way in which the PRB is being implemented; a maximum amount of juice is being removed from it. There had been all sorts of other, extra changes too, but I suppose the “+30 minutes” makes better headlines; it has been a magnet for protest.

AGAIN: I’m sure most of the students are protesting, not because their teachers are telling them to do so, but because they are not happy with the system. *Deal with this point please*. You posted a picture of some kids and said they are roaming around. Later you admitted that there may be many explanations. The most obvious is that they were hungry. I thought that that left your commentary and criticism (of those kids) groundless; contentious at best.
I think we should move on, and try to understand why there is such discontent, instead of bullying the kids like that.

HOw to help ? Teachers again should identify them in class and in those 30 minutes help them.
A teacher role is not only to teach ,.. after training point final .
They should research on innovative methods to teach or for extra curriculum activities.
For example help kids to create groups , clubs , clubs for songs , drama , dance and onwards help them to get into competitions..

Help for debates , show them some communication skills.
This 30 minutes is here that kids switch off from studies .If teachers had the willing to teach or to abide to the role of a teachers.
Today children would not have gone for manifestation saying 30 min more in skul is lost of time .This is a shame for our country.Saying 30 min more = waste of time.

No Yusha. You’re wrong on that part. There are some people who did a research about why they students are not happy to end at 15.00. I was shocked to hear about that. For the time being, I can tell you that the school teachers are not to be blamed. I won’t be home for the next 2 days. When I will be back home, I will post my findings and also the results of the research.

In England, special needs kids can maybe be assimilated more easily into the mainstream. Not just because of better training and better facilities, but because education there is (I think) a bit more rounded and holistic, less exam-based, and the exams are easier. Schools don’t use Cambridge or London papers, they use papers by ‘easier’ exam boards. So more students pass; failure is quite rare, and kids can do up to ELEVEN GCSEs!!! In Mauritius, schools use Cambridge papers, which are tough! Many students fail (even those without special needs) esp. subjects like add maths. Surely it’s hard to assimilate anyone with learning difficulties into that climate. Maybe there should be more special schools in Mauritius? Or maybe mainstream standards should be dumbed-down by using easier papers instead of Cambridge papers? None of these decisions are in the teachers’ hands.

Good ideas here — in principle. Sex education has been suggested along those lines too. Kids in Europe get sex education from a real early age. They are taught about things like masturbation & same-sex relationships, even in primary school. I think that is very good, positive, but I’m not sure if it would work in Mauritius. Girls as young as 14 have left the education system due to pregnancies. So there obviously is work to be done. You’re right. But imagine… A teacher walks into a class of form III girls carrying 40 bananas and a few packets of condoms… The principle is good but I wonder if rectors and teachers would get the backup they need when the complaints start coming. Again, it’s not in the teachers’ hands.
During a recent seminar at a centre in Mauritius, one speaker revealed that “Lesbianism is happening in our schools and it is disgusting”, and another speaker suggested that “Men should go to work to earn the money, and women should stay at home to raise the children.”
Can you see what you are up against?

On this point i wanted to say sth , i went to a state secondary school and in form 3 we had sex education , there was a lady who came to explain how girls get pregnant and all .. a class specially concerning sex .
We had that teacher for only one year , onwards i dont knw what happend.So you see some 6-7 years back there were sex education classes in the curriculum .
These days i think students wont be shocked to have a sex education class.
Its time to show them the importance of preventive pills and test ..concerning the test there can surely be demonstration so that they keep their precautions.

a student isn’t a robot, s/he has the right for freedom, and needs to socialize after school, its not a “thing” that just needs to be kept in school. 30 minutes more is a LOT. They need time ot slack a bit and time to do their homework.
Secondly, as long as i know, we are still living in a democracy, students have the right to do a pacific manifestation if ever they don’t like the way things are.
The very nature of a manifestation makes it impossible for someone to seek permission from, because this is an act “against” a system which is currently in power, it is blatantly logical that no such permission will ever be given for any sort of protests since protests are always done against THE system, and not the other way round. Which means all manifestations should be made illegal??? no in a democracy this is fully legal, its not some twisted fellows who sits and makes decision in a council that’ll deprive people of its right to protest!
